Softening the intimate scenes

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It was early morning when i went out on a trail for photography in early spring. And i noticed these stark purple flowers against the green leaves.

Specific Feedback

I want to try and create a more soft look, especially in the background leaves.
I start with darkening the shadows (to hide the extra details)
I then brink up the blacks a bit
I played around with texture, clarity, and luminosity masking a bit but i feel like the photos aren’t as soft as i want.

Image 1 is probably the closest i think

Waseh, these are really lovely images, especially the last one! They look like a plant called Vinca. Have you tried a Gaussian blur layer, with the opacity carefully determined and with masking to remove the blur from the flowers? You would probably want to brush the background on the mask to gradate it, etc.

hmm let me try that … i tend to work 95% in lightroom, but there are times like this when i need to venture into photoshop i guess lol
thank you!

I like these, Waseh. I wouldn’t try to carry the softness too far, but I agree that it would help make the blossoms stand out. In the first image, that bright, slightly out of focus leaf in front of them steals my attention. If you could bring it down quite a bit and maybe bring up the vinca blossoms I think it would work a bit better. I like the second one, but I would suggest using PS to make some of those bright stems in the background disappear. It’s tools for that are far superior to those in LR. Like Susanna, I’m particularly fond of number three. In addition to trying the blur she suggests, you might, either in PS or with the local adjustment brush in LR bring down the brighter stems in the image and the one bright leaf tip as they do pull my eye from the beautiful arc of blooms.
