We hiked Ormiston Gorge (in the desert country of central Australia) whilst it was still smouldering after bushfires. The image is bittersweet. I would never have seen the birds if the fires had not devastated the spinifex they live amongst.
I was able to get quite close to this pair. They were busy in courtship mode and didn’t pay too much attention to me.

Glennie, this is very nice. The birds are gorgeous and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a photo of this species type before. The benefit of seeing them among the rocks made for a very fine scene overall…
Hi Glennie
I agree with Paul, the pigeon are gorgeous and thank you for sending us the photo of these Spinifex Pigeons.
I did take the shot into DXO Photo Lab 5 and use its clear view plus and smart lighting, to take some of the smoke out this photograph. I hope you like it.

Excellent composition, Glennie. I like the relative positions of the two and the detail is great. If I were processing this, I’d be tempted to bring down the brightess of that one layer of rocks just behind their heads as it tries to pull my eye into the background.
Thanks for taking the time to play with this image. I like the subtle difference you have achieved and wonder what effect I would use in PS? I’ll see what I can achieve.
Thanks Dennis! That’s a great suggestion. I think all the images I have of this pair are all at the same rock. I’ll see what I can do to bring down the brightness of the rocks behind.
Wonderful species, never heard of them nor seen an image. The reason as you described a sad one, but apparently the birds have time and energy for courting ;-). They match the surroundings nicely ! Cheers, Hans
