Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory, South Deerfield, MA
This image was captured in March of 2009 during a field trip with the NENP regional group. In going through my old files, I found this one and decided to address some shortcomings in LRC that I could not before with an older version of PS.
This is full frame height, cropped from each side. The right side had some blown highlights on the perch that cropping alone could not get rid of. In LRC with masking, I was able to tone those down, then cropped from the left to bring the comp into balance.

The lower right side of the wing is blurred, either due to motion or not enough DOF. I’m not sure if that is a deal-breaker or not - thoughts?
Very good, Jim. I didn’t notice the blur on the wing until I read your description, so it’s obviously not a deal breaker with me. The detail in the rest of the butterfly is superb. The cleanup of the perch is excellent.
Jim, I see the slightly blurred bit of wing (looks like a dof issue) but that doesn’t detract from a fine view of this butterfly. The veins in the rest of her wing stand out very well. I also like the textured background and how it frames the bf.
Jim, what a lovely BF and captured so well. A real beauty. The slight oof of the wing doesn’t bother me. I am enjoying the texture you captured in the BF. The BG seems to frame the BF nicely as well. Well done.
Jim: You had a pretty productive session at that meetup. Looks like the light level was pretty low considering your settings. You would probably have needed f8 or f11 to get the entire wing in the DOF and the commensurate slower ss would have created other issues. Of course now we can just boost the ISO and get great image quality but 15 years ago not so much. Good choices and a good result. Keep 'em coming. >=))>
