Stormy Bloom

I am finally starting to work on my super bloom captures but when I pulled up the “super bloom” tag on LR, this image from 2017 showed up. I looked at it a few minutes and I thought that it had some potentials so I started processing it. All comments and critiques are most welcome.

Nikon D750, the old Nikkor 300mm f/4 AF lens at f/8, ISO 800, 1/1600. It was one windy day at the edge of the storm.

Re-Edit:
I had to start from scratch because for whatever reason the PSD file was corrupted and I cannot open it. I keep in mind the suggestions for having slightly more contrast in some areas. And I think this one to some extent achieves that while staying true to the original vision. I don’t know if it’s any better than the original version though.

This has an interesting quality, almost like it’s caught in between a traditional and an abstract. It almost looks like a huge yellow twisted rope running across the landscape. I think works as is, but is not quite as strong as it would be if it were more abstract or had a more specific focal point with leading lines.

I look forward to this year’s super bloom; I would have loved to have been able to head south to join the fun.

Adhika, that’s a nice concept given the stormy atmosphere. The rich yellow stands out well against the hazy look. If mine I think I would play with darkening the cool tones a bit while keeping the warmer spectrum and low contrast as is. Seems to me as shown this gives the impression it’s a sun shower (which it may well be at the edge as you say), just a notion to ponder. You’re like me in that long telephoto landscapes can be loads of fun.

Adhika, this works for me as cross between a traditional and abstract landscape (as @John_Williams labeled it). The edge of of a storm type weather has created a really nice mood here. I’m with @Bill_Leggett, I would introduce a little more contrast by darkening the cooler and darker tones in the image, leaving the yellows unaffected, and only going far enough to avoid losing the hazy look in the sky and distant hill. But overall, I like the composition and color, a bit more contrast would take it up another notch.

I agree with Ed. Even though it’s a misty day, I think it would be well served with a slight bump in contrast.

Adhika ; I rather like the delicacy of tone and am not so sure about any increase in contrast - I guess it’s a pretty subjective matter. Certainly the play of lines and forms is very appealing.

Adhika,

What makes this a bit unique is that haziness. And by including the low cloud cover and misty conditions up top, you provide the reasoning for the somewhat hazy appearance. One could easily mask that with contrast/saturation adjustments, but then of course you immediate lose the story of the original. I wouldn’t change anything.

Lon

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate the inputs here. I can see the contrast boost but at the same time I agree with Lon that the storm is somewhat special and I would like to keep that. I did, however, play with it a little more and have updated the OP above. I don’t know if it makes it any better. Unfortunately I had to start from scratch because for whatever reason the PSD file was corrupted and I cannot open it.

Superbloom indeed, Adhika. I think your small tweaks with the contrast has nailed it because you still maintained the moodiness with the storm rolling in over the hills. The rolling hills provide some nice layers and depth to this magical scene. Beautiful image.

great shot @Adhika_Lie! i like the overcast conditions and the misty atmosphere. somehow the colour of the flowers seems to be even more intense! you did a great job on the processing!

between those two version i have a slight preference for the original because of the added clarity/microcontrast.
i’m wondering what happens in terms of balance when you clone out the few flowers in the lower left?!

i hope you print this one big!
cheers
