The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I went for a walk on Stradbroke Island and this view presented. It was fairly rough and the best wave shapes and spray were almost directly into the sun, leading to this high contrast photo framed by the rocks. It was a pleasure waiting for the terns to become part of the photo. Taken about an hour after sunrise.
Specific Feedback
Does the sky need more work - so the clouds are more visible. Are the rocks too dark? Are the light to dark transitions adequate? This is one of my first forays into mono.
Technical Details
Canon 90D, 1/250th sec, F11, ISO 100, 70mm lens (used polariser but it did little except keep salt spray off the lens itself)
I like this a lot, Rob. It quite dynamic with lots of energy. The large version shows the FG rocks pretty nicely, so I think the tonality is fine. The waves look perfect. You might be able to bring out the clouds a bit, but you don’t want the sky to look muddy.
Very nicely done, Rob. The rocks and the water both seem right to me. The water is very dynamic. As for the sky, I’d prefer to see the clouds a little better or not at all, but I’m not sure what you have to work with and what you can do. The image is a fine one either way.
This really works for me too Rob. I can just hear the crash of the surf and the cry of the gulls.
I like the strength of the rocks and waves, but the birds are what add the cherry on top. Normally I’d probably vote to bring out the clouds more, but here I like the fact that they are subtle and let the birds stand out.
Thank you all for your comments. I tried to make the clouds more visible, but the change interfered with the spray, removing the separation between sky and spray. They also became a distraction to the birds. In retrospect, I have changed the crop slightly as the rocks were a bit dominant. Thank you once again.
Hi Rob,
I think you pretty much nailed it with your slight crop of the FG rocks. You definitely captured the dynamic raw power of the waves with this image. Seeing the spray from the crashing waves is a wonderful element in this scene as are those gulls flying about. This puts me right there. Very nicely done.
