The wave

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was taken on an isolated beach on Molokai at sunset. I was so drawn to the light shining through the wave and the power of these waves as they hit the shore.

Specific Feedback

I’m particularly interested in the composition and the contrast of the muted background and brilliant green wave.

Technical Details

I’d love feedback of the contrast between the bright green and the muted background

An interesting approach to this week’s challenge, Michael. I really like the composition and the muted hill/mountain in the background does help accent the wave. To my eye, the wave is looking a little “crunchy”, like you tried to pull out a little more detail than needed in it. It makes the solid water part look really cool, but the spray is starting to look a bit strange to my eye and parts of it look like the whites might be blown out.

There are arguments on both sides of this, but I think it does help if you provide the details of shooting parameters under technical details and even something on what software and processing you used, so people can make more intelligent suggestions.

Dennis,
Thank you for your comments. I agree that the wave does look a bit crunchy and I tried to just now cut back a little bit on the clarity texture and even the dehaze. The shooting parameters you asked for I was using my Nikon Z6 at F8 with an ISO of 250 and a speed of 1/2000 and 400 mm on my Nikkor Z 100 to 400 lens.

Michael, this is a spectacular catch of this wave as it’s breaking. The textures in the water, green colors are outstanding. I do agree about the splash looking crunchy. I also don’t think this fits this weeks theme, since line one of the challange says, “…landscapes and natural features that have been shaped by the persistent power of water.” While this shows the power of water very well it looks to me to be all water. I’m happy to leave it here, but it could also be tagged landscape, your choice?

Appreciate your comments, thanks.

Michael: Great action shot and I agree with the previous comments. I can also see this as a stand alone of the wave without the BG land forms. Dynamic capture .>=))>

What a beautiful catch Michael!

I LOVE this idea. That glass-like green is my favorite part, and cropping isolates it to look almost abstract.

(You have to click the icon to see the full-size image to appreciate it, but think the sharpness/clarity you developed really sings in the cropped version.)

Thank you, I’m glad you like it, John.
