Sunny Side Up

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Our succulents just continue to delight. This is called a Split Rock and the flower is about the size of a half dollar. This is by far the best flower of the season so far.

Specific Feedback

I considered fixing some of the little flaws in the petals but decided to leave them alone. I also toned down the magenta URC and tried to hide it with my copyright but is it still too much of a distraction?

Bill, this is a gorgeous flower and the perspective and comp is perfect, although a little more room might be even better. Fine detail and that orange and yellow is marvelous against the detail of the “rock”.
Really looking forward to your cactus images this year, now that they are starting to blooom!

I’ve seen these succulents but never the bloom – quite amazing! Wonderful detail captured and the slight flaws add to it, for me. Nature is rarely perfect. I love the lighting that shows off the shape of the little stones.

I don’t mind the bit of magenta but the “plaid” pattern is a bit noticeable. Might be mitigated with a select subject and a Field Blur, which won’t spill over a selection edge.

Dr,. Living Stone I presume! A nice flower and I would have moved it further from the cactus in the BG which produced a pattern that caught my eye. Flower looks good and I like the one petal that’s folded over. I bought Jenny a few of these and none have bloomed so far. Well done…Jim

Beautiful, Bill. The red in the upper right didn’t register when I looked at the image, so I wouldn’t worry about it. The background pattern didn’t bother me, though my wife noticed it and thought it might be fabric (I’m going with cactus knowing your penchant for them). As others have mentioned, the imperfect flower just adds to the image. Excellent work.

Bill, this is great! I had a Living Stone for many years and it never bloomed, so this is an extra treat. Yes, I’d tone down slightly the magenta in the urc. The details in the bloom look great, with the “flaws” adding interest/character. If you’re thinking about printing this, I do see a few “stacking overlap” artifacts where the petals at the bottom overlap the stone, that can be fixed via cloning.

Excellent, Bill. I’m not familiar with the Living Stone but can see how it got its name. Wonderful details in this beauty. I agree with @Mark_Seaver about toning down the magenta in the urc.
