Self Critique

I really think that capturing a photo of a swimming grizzly certainly could be described as “successful”. I was lucky to be in a position to capture this image at all. I just wanted to get the shot.

Creative direction

Not sure I had any grand visions of what I wanted to capture here. It happened very fast and I was just trying to get an image, any image.

Specific Feedback

I did manage to capture the eyes, which is always good. I wish it were a little sharper, but I was hand holding a 540mm lens.

Description

This was taken in Grand Teton National Park at the Oxbow Bend Overlook of the Snake River. I drove by the pullout and saw quite a few cars there. I knew something was going on. I was told a grizzly was in the heavy brush on the banks close to the river. I drove a ways down the road, parked my truck and walked down to the river’s edge. I was pretty far from where I was told the bear was. After waiting for some time, I noticed a commotion close to where the cars were. I leaned out over the river and saw the grizzly swimming toward me. I only had a couple of seconds to fire off a few shots before scrambling up the bank to my truck.

Jerry, definitely catching a swimming grizzly is a great success! I think lightening it up a bit will help. For my taste I like a little tighter crop on the grizzly. Love the eyes.
