Taking Flight

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I occasionally get the urge to bring home an orchid (most frequently when I’m trying to get out of the doghouse) but when I saw this one in the store I decided to bring it home and see if it would agree to some modeling. She didn’t say no so we went to work. I set up my bathroom “studio” and used a piece of scrap mat board as a BG and exposed to blow out the whites and soften the flowers a bit. This is also what I’m calling selective stacking. I wanted precise focus on the lips and let the rest fall as it might.>=))>

Specific Feedback

I did a few full flower stacks but still came back to this. Does this work for you?

It works very well for me, Bill. The colors and shapes are lovely and I like your approach to focus. It’s a good one.

Very beautiful, Bill. The focus stack works very well this way, and it’s always the photographer’s option to begin and end a stack wherever they choose. My one tiny nit is the furthest back out of focus petal on the left which is also a little washed out. I think it could stand to have the saturation boosted just a tiny bit as it feels a little out of place as it is.

An exquisite high-key floral image.

I can see the point Dennis makes, but I think having the back, OOF pedals fade into the high-key BG works too.

Nicely done!

This is excellent as is Bill. I like the fading flower in the BG because it adds to the 3D effect. Beautiful work and beautiful model. Your wife should be very happy with both.
