Description

My bedroom opens on to a long verandah that catches the morning sun. It was a good morning indeed to wake up to this nightjar who decided to roost only a couple of metres from my door. The tree and the wombat berry vine had been trimmed a few weeks earlier, hence the lovely dead camo hiding place for the bird. A pair and their offspring have been gracing my front yard for many years.

This image was taken later in the afternoon when the bird had started getting ready for the night ahead.

Specific Feedback

I have much tighter crops and frames, but decided to go with a bit more habitat. Is the brighter sky in the background troublesome?

All comments welcome!

Technical Details

ISO 2000 f6.3 150-600@270mm Hand Held 1/1600

Very basic ACR adjustments , including denoise which it probably really didn’t need. Into PS for removal of a couple of blades of she-oak over her eye.

Wonderful!! I love the habitat and the cute crown he is wearing! The habitat colors are just right and the sky provides a nice complement. My only thought – not a nit, just a thought – is a crop of about 1/5 from the left to move the bird off center a bit. Then he is balanced by the sky.

How lucky you are to wake up to this! I love that you have included some habitat rather than a close crop. The bird looks nice and sharp to me; I can look right into his eyes. I also would move him a bit off center.

I like the framing, Glennie. No need to crop tighter and the sky in the background isn’t at all intrusive. I was shown and photographed one of these 12 years ago when we were in Queensland, but it was way up high, and nothing like this. This is a beauty.

Thank you @Dennis_Plank , @shannon1 , @Diane_Miller !

I had a play with composition to move bird off centre.

Even better, Glennie.

Two thumbs up, and throw in two big toes, if they count too! I think the balance is even better now and the bird totally deserves being bigger in the frame!

What a cool bird. I like the balance of the repost; nicely done.

Because that brighter sky bits are such a different color, they should be pretty easy to target if you wanted to knock them back a bit:

Thank you everyone!

Thank you @John_Williams . That would be an easy fix. I like the colour but no so much the bright. I’ll give your suggestion a try.

@Diane_Miller ! Thank you for the nudge. “Balance” is something I wing. I never pay enough attention to it. Your suggested crop has made a very likeable difference.

I didn’t notice the EP! Thank you! It’s much appreciated.

Beautiful image - love the straight on gaze at us and also the included environment. Repost looks great with enough environment and the bird bigger in the frame.
