Description
I captured this shot of an Iberian wood pecker from a hide during an Iberian lynx workshop in Spain this last week. That day we didn’t see a lynx but there were plenty of birds to photograph with great light!
Specific Feedback
After playing with a few different crops I’m still on the fence about this one. Also does it seem like I raised the shadows too much?

Wonderful!! I think the first one is the best crop, and the shadows look fine! I love how well we can pull detail from shadows with today’s cameras and software. The colors are gorgeous as is the OOF BG and the rugged perch suggests the environment.
An optional enhancement could be to do a soft-edged selection of the darkest parts of the bird and pull up a bit more dark detail there with a curves (or with less control with levels). That can be tedious but it will bring the bird forward a bit. But as is, it shows the camouflage aspect. Very nice image!
Very nice, Matthew. I do think the top version works the best with an excellent crop. I could see bringing the darker areas of the bird up a trifle, but it works nicely as posted.
Hi Matthew, Intriguing bird - one I’ve never seen. Nice view of the topside with a fine head turn. Well captured. I’ll echo the thoughts already posted above. I like the top crop and think shadows could be lifted a little more. Nice work.
