The Mighty Fallen

Image Description

This is surely not forest floor minutiae but certainly gives rise to much of it. Last October found me on the Avenue of the Giants in Redwoods NP. Since it was the off season there were very few folks around and wandering just a little off the highway brought me to this scene. Besides my career and photography, one of my great loves is the study and teaching of the Bible. In 2 Samuel 1:19 David laments the deaths of King Saul and David’s dearest friend, Saul’s son Jonathan. “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen.” That verse immediately sprang to mind in the silence of the forest morning. It was humbling to be in the presence of something that was once magnificent and mighty and was a reminder to me to never think more highly of myself than I should and to remember that while we all fall how we stand and live can lead to good things for others when we leave. >=))>

As you might have guessed this was a dynamic range nightmare. Exposures ran from 1/5 second to 20 seconds. The HDR blending in LR wasn’t completely satisfactory so I used Luminar Neo instead with much better results. Thanks to Kris Smith who pointed out some flaws in the original posting which led me to Luminar and back to LR to tame some of the BG sunbeams.

Bill, all of your processing efforts have given you a fine result here. The lighting looks nicely realistic and the fallen tree stands out well.
