The shooter shot

By chance, my wife photographed me at the exact moment I was shooting.
Her picture shows how close you can get to wildlife in a kayak that is pedal-driven, involving minimal movement and no splashing.
Below is the image I was making.

Interesting, Michael. I’ve heard of those kayaks-someone on NPN several years ago used one with excellent results. The lighting is interesting in these images. Is there some kind of major yard light providing the illumination of this area with the black background?

No artificial lighting. The sun had just risen: in order to retain detail in the bird, I underexposed quite a bit, and rather liked the resulting dark background!

Two neat images. Certainly the black bg makes for a different look. I like the nice story being told in the first image. Nice.
