The Water Jump

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I went to a local horse training and eventing center for their semi-annual Three Day Eventing program yesterday. I like the cross-country because there’s a faint chance of getting a relatively uncluttered background. While these are all obviously different riders and horses, in the more advanced group I was able to watch they had to jump over the logs in the background into a small shallow pool and immediately turn about 45 degrees to do another jump within the pool. This sequence shows the entrance to the pool and realignment for the next jump.

I think the next time I go I might just take my birding set up and do head shots of the riders. Their expressions are amazing as the come into and go over a jump.

Specific Feedback

Does the series convey some kind of continuity despite the change of character from image to image?

Technical Details

All images made with a Sony A1, FE 70-200 f/4 macro + 1.4 TC, at various focal lengths. All images taken at f/5.6 and iso 800. The shutter speed was changed with the varying light since it was a mostly, but not all cloudy morning.

Processing in LR & PS CC. No noise reduction or sharpening. Adjustments to exposure both local and global particularly when it got sunny. Lots of cloning to remove irritating stuff.

Wonderful, both each image on its own and as a sequence. Going for the rider’s expressions would be fun, but don’t neglect the horses’ looks of concentration and determination! Burst mode all the way – bring extra cards.

Dennis: I like all of them as they give a good sense of the nature of the event. The second photo is worth a print.

Hi Sandy. They might, but the event has a dedicated professional photographic team, and I’d be stepping way out of bounds to even hint at such a thing.
