A fine shot, Steve. I like the composition. It’s simple and uncluttered. The heron’s placement is fine. I can’t see where else it might go except dead center and this is preferable.

To the left of heron’s head some leaves are poking through the darkness. They’re a little distracting. Other bits of background are poking through here and there but those don’t bother me.

Nice look at this reddish egret Steve. I like your placement in the frame, but the -4.7 EV seems to be a bit too much IMHO. The BG looks like it may have been pretty busy, so you may not have wanted too much detail showing up behind the main attraction. I think I would still try to lift the shadows a bit, and consider using some Gaussian blur on the BG elements. You may want to do that with the top fringe of leaves here as it is.

A Reddish Egret as @Ed_Williams noted, Don. The Tri-color would have a white stripe down the front of the neck and some white showing on the belly-though the last isn’t showing much in this image. I also agree with Ed that the minus 4.7 EV is probably excessive for this scene as I don’t see any real highlights that you needed to worry about. A nice job on the egret itself, though I think you could bring it up a bit more and I like the idea of the dark background. I could see going darker at the top and leaving just the merest hint of habitat visible.

Hi Steve, nice catch. I like the pose with the head turn towards us and profile view. Agree with trying lightening the image to perhaps bring more of a hint of the background elements. Maybe just try lightening shadows and see what that does.
I’m pretty sure this is an adult Little Blue Heron. Nice capture with fine feather detail.
