Tulip Tree

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I kept this low key as the flower was peeking low down out of the forest on a cloudy day in Raleigh, NC last week.

Specific Feedback

Are you OK with the pale ends of the petals? As this is a stack, I thought they could be a bit sharper.

Technical Details

D500 + 105mm macro 1/2000 f3.5 ISO 400 7 shots stacked in Zerene.

Minor softening of parts of BG and cleaning up of leaf. Added some contrast in PS.

I like the lower key presentation, Mike. The pale tips of the petals don’t bother me and I like the presentation, though after you called attention to it, I am a bit puzzled by the softness of the rear petals since everything in front of and behind them is in crisp focus. It doesn’t really affect the presentation of the image, it’s just a strange anomaly.

A wonderful capture of one of my favorite trees. It isn’t easy to find a pleasing arrangement of a flower with surrounding leaves, but you did it here. I love the bright ends of the petals – it gives a nice 3D effect.

They will be blooming here soon and I’m already scouting possible trees.

Good job on the stacking and well composed. For me, the 3D effect is how it seems so well separated from the background. Nice job, Mike.

Mike: I’m jealous of your opportunity. We had one of these in our garden a few years ago but it never bloomed and eventually died mysteriously. I love the color palette and your comp. Well seen and nicely captured.>=))>
