That’s a cool landform, Don. I prefer the broader one to show a bit more context.
Of the two images presented, I prefer the first wider view. While I find the badlands formations to be more interesting than the trees, the second composition here feels a bit cramped at the bottom. I also think a third more abstract interpretation of this landscape might be interesting as well. Here is a rework reflecting my idea.
I think there is an abstract within this grand scene. I would try another image which is a crop of the the diagonal contrasty section of the lower right of the badlands. Something like the following.
