About This Image

I have been listening to Cole Thompson on Under Exposure Photography. A technique he uses on some of his images. So out I go for a walk and decided to shoot the Water Fountain and go under exposed and see what happens. Huge contrast and Night Time effect in the middle of the day. Kinda Cool. Always for Fun !!!

Any Comments ??? Does any one else do this as an effect. I am always learning and would love to hear comments or Photo stories on this technique.

Technical Details

ISO 250 shutter 640 f 18 edit in photoshop … Contrast , some dodging, Small crop Used the color faders to convert to B&W .. Not too much editing …

I like the effect of night created by this technique in this particular image, Gill. The “flower petal” patterns created on the surface by the side jets really do a great job of leading the eye into the main fountain-as if it needed help. Without them, I’d probably suggest a more vertical crop, but with them, I think this composition is an excellent choice.

Thanks. I use a technique I don’t know much about. Just learning how it works.

Visual Notes

Very creative Gill. I’ve never done this before but you’ve got me interested now. Cole is a very creative and talented photographer and I love what he does with B&W. I’m thinking that this could be pretty unique if you did a long exposure on it as well. You’d have to have an ND filter for your lens but I’d imaging a really dreamy flowing image.
[Crop] We know this is an abstract and so I thought why not make it even more of an abstract and crop off the top of the image removing the light creeping in through the trees which is distracting. We still know it’s a water fountain we just don’t know how high it goes. Part of the mystique maybe?

[D1] You might dodge these flower petals as Dennis puts it. I think they could all be a little bit brighter.

Neat concept and a great start at something new. Love it.

Thanks. I did dodge it some. Maybe more needed. I’m looking at getting a new 10stop magnetic ND filter clip on. I have a screw on and it does great but have to be careful putting it on. So I’m working on some new techniques and ideas.

Just walk and look and shoot and keep it fun and honest.

Thanks again.
