Unusual Company

Both Sea Lions and Sea Otters feed on spawning salmon at the Valdez Hatchery But you never see them close to each other because the Otters are usually concerned about the possibility of becoming lunch for a Sea Lion. That’s why this was such an unusual photo! The Otter was munching on an old salmon and the Sea Lion surfaced right next to it. Neither seemed particularly interested in each other and they simply went on about their separate businesses. This shot does show the huge difference in their sizes though!

Sony a6500, FE100400GM @ 121 mm, ISO-1250, f/5.6, 1/1000, hand held.

Gary, the size contrast is quite dramatic, plus the predator/prey issue makes this shot extra interesting. The detail in all 3 critters show well with the swirls and ripples in the water holding interest throughout the frame.

I love the look on the Sea Lion Gary. Great detail in his eye. Your patience paid off on this photo, nicely seen and executed.

Thank you Linda, but this shot was more a result of pure luck and fast reactions

@Gary_Minish - Gary, it’s very impressive that you were ready enough to be able to react quickly and get this unusual shot with everything very sharp. It’s an interesting story.
