Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have spent a lot of time this winter on the shore taking photos of the coming and going of the ice. This photo was taken during a spectacular sunset, showing the thin ice and the shallow waters by the shore. With an ice clad rock and a small island in the distance.

Specific Feedback

Should I enhance the stones in the water or not? Is the pattern in the ice working? Anything I should have done differently. The photo is a panorama, and I was standing on the tip of a small peninsula and could not go either left nor right . And further to the right was another bog island that I did not want to include.

Technical Details

Welcome to NPN, Annika. I missed your first two posts - they’re just as gorgeous as this one! This photo is working quite well for me. :slightly_smiling_face: The ice patterns are so interesting and you framed them well so they lead to the big rock. I don’t think you need to enhance that rock at all. The ice lines leading to it and the way it’s framed by the blue color really leads our attention to it. Just wonderful.

So beautiful. The colors are gorgeous. I like how the blue gradually fades to pink and purple. The lines in the ice are well framed and lead the eye to the large rock, which then leads you to the small island and along the horizon. Very well done.

The colors are the first thing that get my attention in this image. They are stunning. Very complimentary. I also love that I can’t tell if that rock is 100 feet tall or 3 feet tall. The foreground ice patterns are terrific and really lead the eye through the scene. I particularly like the rocks in the foreground under the ice. It really gives it dimension and adds a little bit of mystery.
You ask if you should enhance the rock…No, I think this is perfect as is. In fact, I can’t find a single nit in this image. It’s lovely as is. Well done, Annika.

This is lovely – nothing more I can add to the comments above!

At first it felt like the horizon was a bit crooked but the ruler tool in PS says it is dead-level. Just an optical illusion. That might be mitigated by emphasizing the faint horizon on the left.

Well seen and presented!!

Wow.
This is very nice.
It keep me trying to understand what it was for a few seconds, but still continue to feel “mysterious” .

Thanks a lot for your feedback. So glad you like my photo.

Thank you so much for your feedback Chris!

Thanks a lot David! It was such a beautiful afternoon sunset.

Thanks a lot Diane! I shall check what I can do about the horizon.

Thanks a lot Joao!

How enchanting Annika. The way the ice flows like webbing is fascinating, the ice covered rock is intriguing! As others note, the color is really nice. This is my favorite part:

Annika, This is a wonderful photo - especially how the closer rock is brighter than the surrounds and really stands out above it’s reflection. I like the leading line from the foreground to the rock, but wonder if the bright ice shards on the leading line that leads from foreground to the right could be muted a little. This tends to lead my eye to the right and out of the photo. Well done

That sounds like agood idea to mute the ice cracks on the right. I’ve been a bit troubled by them leading out of the photo, too. Thanks Rob!

Looks like you are indeed a “hunter”. This is a very thoughtfully constructed photograph. The colors and the patterns of the ice are unworldly, making this a scene that I can savor for a while. I also wondered about the right side; tried toning down the bright sky, and then tried this crop (textbook rule of thirds), in which the upper left also got a little attention.

What a sensual image. The surface feels so slick and slippery, and cold.

I like this crop. Feels more balanced!

I have zero critique, but feel compelled to comment on such a gorgeous image. The color is vibrant and yet not overdone, and your composition is spot on. Some nice contrasts happening here. This one’s a stunner!

I just want to add my voice to the throng of praise for this wonderful image. The colour is outstanding but what I find excites me most is the depth starting with the ice lines , then the rock, the island, and finally the far horizon tucked away on the right. While @Dick_Knudson 's suggested crop is indeed “textbook”, I find your original version far more intriguing.
