Wall of Lichen

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

After shooting some scenes along the Ammonoosuc River Mike and I were coming back through the woods when I first noticed this rock. As soon as I saw this rock face; covered with varying shades of lichen; I knew that I was going to try and capture an image of it. I was drawn to all the horizontal lines as well as the textures and details in the lichen.

Specific Feedback

I enjoy the image, but I would like to hear what other’s thoughts are. To static or boring?

Technical Details

Nikon Z7, Nikon 24-200 @ 79 mm, f 13 @ 1.6 sec, ISO 200, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod.

Ed, Since I LOVE mosses and lichens, this is a really neat image for me. All the ridges in the rock, with little tiny stuff hiding there, is very cool.
Hard to get a perspective - about how wide is your frame?
Sweet image!

Thanks for the kind words Sandy; always appreciated. This is a crop from the original; so I am guessing 2.5’ x 3’. I could not get any closer as there was a gully between me and the rock.

Ed, the mix of colors are set off well by the horizontal cracks. I too really like close-up looks at lichen and moss and this view has great variety. I do think that bringinging the brightness down would add interest by increasing (slightly) the saturation and better differentiating the multitude of subtle colors. I quickly tried a brightness/contrast layer in PS with -30 brightness and liked the results.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the suggestion. I will give that a go and post the rework later.

Ed: Eye watering detail and a marvelous color palette. I like Mark’s suggestion but this works very well for me as is. Glad that you stopped and a testimony to really good photographic vision. >=))>
