The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I like lichen and found this rock yesterday that was nearly covered with colonies. When processing it, I was struck by the resemblance to a map. To emphasize that, I did take liberties with the saturation and tried to emphasize the boundaries, which involved some layer work that I don;t normally include in a literal image, so if wanted, this could go to Abstract instead.
Specific Feedback
When you look at this, do you see lichen or a map or switch between them or neither one?
Technical Details

I combined the base layer with another that had had the “find edges” filter applied and then been emphasized with a curves layer and reduced in opacity using the multiply blending mode. Texture, clarity, saturation all adjusted in LR.

I like lichen too, and I think you found a very interesting batch here. Your treatment is quite interesting. I don’t so much see a map as something more like a patch of seafloor, but an image like this doesn’t need a literal asterisk/subtitle. It stands on its own.
I wondered about a little more contrast to bring out colors and shapes. Not to make it better – just a different interpretation.
Dennis, I thought I was looking at a drone shot from above for a moment. Very interesting. I need to start looking at lichen more and seeing what I find to photograph. The contrast added by @Diane_Miller makes it pop more. As she said, just a different interpretation. Nicely seen and captured.
Dennis: I like the map analogy. Hard to perceive the scale and I like that as well. I also like @Diane_Miller’s variation and think both work very nicely. Well seen and presented. >=))>
Dennis, this is a fine collection of lichen with lots of subtle variation and interesting shapes. It does feel like a map. Diane’s adjustments add quite a bit of pop.
Hi Dennis, I’m a lichen lover too and they’re always prime candidates for closeups; it’s like a little world in there! Actually, to me it looked like a puzzle. The complimentary hues and borders make it interesting to explore too. I thought it was a little dark, but Diane’s edit does seem to brighten it up somewhat. Nicely seen and captured!
