Technical Details

The world of lichens is endlessly complex. I cannot understand them at al well, but they make a nice picture at times.

Amazingly good depth of field for a single shot, Delton, and a beautiful composition. This is a great demonstration that focus stacking isn’t the be-all and end-all of macro work, though I’m amazed that f/9 was enough to get this. A beautifully exposed and very crisp image. Excellent work.

Dennis: Thank you for your note. However, my mistake: I forgot to note “focus stacked.” I find, esp with macro, that I cannot get decent focus depth on my subjest and also blur the background enough. So: focus stacking helps a lot with this situations.

Very nice shot, stacked or not. @Kris_Smith will probably enjoy this shot when she sees it because she likes shooting lichen. I haven’t had great success at it yet, but probably because I haven’t gotten into stacking. Hopefully I will get the time to try it and learn because it does give you more DOF and allow the BG to be out oof. Well done.

Shirley: Thank you. I find that the stacking gives vastly better DOF, but only if you fiddle, play, experiment, try again…. But when you get it right it’s nice.

A gorgeous capture of a wonderful subject!! Exceptionally sharp and well composed! The colors of the subject are very nice, but 'm questioning if the green in the BG is competing for attention a little. Tweaking it slightly with Selective Color of Hue-Sat could be interesting.

A beautiful cluster, Delton. I agree that the BG green could be tweaked a bit. I’m always interested to read about stacking details (no. of shots especially). Very well seen and taken.

Thanks to Shirley for tagging me in this so I wouldn’t miss it. Lichen/moss clusters are so much fun and a real challenge to get done well. Some of the cut off bits on some of the edges stand out to me, but they might not bother you so I can live with them. The whole thing does seem a bit cyan and the colors aren’t as separated as they might be, but that’s just me. There’s such a wealth of textures and mix of foliose lichens and tiny bryophytes…what a treat.

Delton: What a great find and a fine capture. Initially I was like Dennis thinking this was a single capture and glad you cleared that up. The stack looks good and I’m ok with the comp although @Kris_Smith captures my sentiments on some of the clipped edges. Pretty small nit for such a nice image. >=))>

Thanks, Bill. Yeah, it often seems in retrospect that a subject like this needs a bit more “breathing room.”
