Moss and Lichen

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

When I was out taking some images for the moss challenge a couple of weeks ago, I took this but didn’t post it because I thought the other suited the topic better. This is part of the moss and growing on an old piece of wood next to our backyard pond. The entire scene is probably less than six inches across.

Specific Feedback

I did quite a bit of playing with dodging and burning to achieve what I hoped was a somewhat balanced composition-did it work? I’m also a bit concerned about the lipstick lichen in the lower left as being a bit dominant in the frame.

Technical Details

Sony A7Rv, FE 70-200 f/4 macro @ 138 mm, tripod, 70 images using the auto focus bracketing function stacked in Helicon Focus. All images at f/13, 1/125, iso 200. Further processing in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 9318x5774. Taken at 2:27 P.M. on March 20th.

Dennis: What an interesting little scene and light you have here. My eye does go to the reds in the LLC but drifts back to the rest of the image easily enough. All the fine details are a delight. Well seen and presented. >=))>

Overall, this is a pretty nice mini-landscape. The lipstick lichen doesn’t bother me as much as the strong diagonal shadow. I would like to see this image retaken with a diffuser used to as shade the entire scene with soft light which might provide a different take on the scene. Well done…Jim

Well, Jim, we do get enough clouds up here to act as a diffuser. Not sure how I found a day with sun.

Dennis, this looks great. Yes, the lipstick lichen get first attention, but then the bright green moss and the spots of lichen pull my interest into the rest of the frame. It’s a lovely miniature scene.
