Western Maple

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

There is not a lot of stunning autumn color on the west coast, but the Western Maple turns a lovely yellow. It is basically riparian and is often found in a nice setting. This intimate scene appealed to me on its own but needed a touch of magic to bring out what I felt and Corel Painter gave me the clone brush tools I wanted to bring out a rainy look. This is another oldie, from 2005. Painter went away and I need to see if there is some current version. It was special while it lasted.

A little retouching on the raw file in PS, then to Corel Painter for the final look.

Diane, this is a lovely mix of shapes and colors, nicely distorted by the software. The wide “V” of yellow leaves that are only slightly distorted works well at keeping my eyes moving throughout the frame.

Diane, this is a wonderful rendition of fall colours. I used to use Corel Painter, but have not found a replacement.
Masterful work - congrats on a fine EP!

Thanks, @Mark_Seaver and @SandyR-B! And belated thanks for the EP, Mark! (I’ve been in astro-land for a few weeks – time to dig out.) This has survived through the years as one of my favorite images and I mourn the loss of Corel Painter. Glad to hear from another user, Sandy. I haven’t taken time to look for a replacement but really need to. I dislike all but a few slap-on filters, but Painter in clone mode lets you pick up a specific color and smear it around with a huge choice of brushes whose strokes simulate varying kinds of paint being dragged along. It’s completely different from painting on a color in PS. (Maybe time to get back into oil painting?)

One of the things I am really learning here and with photography in general is: the photo from the camera isn’t even close to the final image. The final image is what the photographer makes it be. And it’s works like this that is really helping me expand my ideas of what makes a beautiful photo image. The playful tones and colors are a lot of fun. Nice.

Thanks @patrick6! I have enjoyed your your very worthy contributions here and look forward to more! The definitions have changed a little over the years but it’s still very relevant to the digital age that “The negative is the score.; the print is the performance.” – Ansel Adams.
