White Sands NP Evening

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

What I love about the graphite sand is how it’s translucence shows the ambient color at any particular time of day. I can be subtle like here.

Specific Feedback

I think the URC sun works well but wondering about other’s thoughts.

Technical Details

1/15 sec, f/13, iso 50, 300mm

Very nice!! Lovely ripples in the sand with the subtle reflected colors, and a very interesting BG. I get the impression of a slight disconnect between the FG and BG colors, though. I can’t guess if they have been treated separately but wonder about removing some red from the BG. I love the sunlight in the UR corner!

Thank you Diane. I did handle the sky separately. I give a look at less red.

I like the yellow and orange sky, and the contrast of that to the foreground. Not sure about the grass on the RHS as I find it a bit of a distraction.

Your overall scene is quite enjoyable Mario, with a “peaceful, ease, feeling.” I agree the sun works well with that brightness peeking in from the corner.

Two considerations you might play with. First, the sands around the grass clumps seem overly yellow compared to the rest of the sand. (This is especially noticeable in the smaller version.) Second, although I typically tend to prefer higher saturation than the average NPN photographer, this one looks better to me with the saturation lowered a bit.

Thank you for the comments John. Interestingly one of the reasons I made the image was the lighting around the shrubs. As I have said in other images the graphite tends to appear like ambient color due to its translucency. That is what is occurring here.

Mario, this is terrific. Others have made some suggestions, and I will just enjoy the view. Well done.

Thank you for your time to review @Mark_Orchard @Diane_Miller @John_Williams @David_Bostock Appreciated.

Hi Mario,
The light you captured here is magical and I love the way it transitions across the scene. This image has a soft delicate mood to it that I find very inviting. You also created a wonderful depth to it with all of the layers from FG to BG. While I quite like this as is I think getting rid of those two mounds with the brush would elevate this another notch and make it more of an abstract. Just my opinion of course. Very nicely done.
