Whitewater Canyon Wall

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Whitewater Canyon outside of Palm Springs is fairly typical of the washes emerging from the San Bernardino Mountains. Maybe not “sculpted” by water, but seriously rearranged every time a flash flood comes through. I like rambling around in the chaos of rock, driftwood, sand and mud afterwards.

Specific Feedback

Shot on an overcast day. Edited to punch up the color and contrast. But should I just go back and try again in better light?

Technical Details

Nikon Z6II handheld, 1/500th, ISO400, 24MM, F8.

James, was this a recent take from Whitewater? Needless to say the area has had a pretty good pounding as of late from the storms and even the start of snow runoff in that area.
The boulder assembly shares a wall look from the avalanching hillsides overall. The snow covered peak in the background provides an interesting view. For a non invasive look you could always clone out the power line towers back in the middle ground too. Just a thought not any nits at all… :+1:

Thanks Paul — shot last year.
But the area has plenty of rugged (and dangerous) terrain most any time. Some of those boulder walls are 8 to 10 feet.
That shot was during the Cottonwood colors, about the only color out there except black white and gray!
Yes good to erase power towers. With a bit of effort one can compose to keep them out in the first place.

Agreed. I saw the trees in the middle ground there. It’s been a few years since I was in that area and the actual Whitewater Canyon reserve location. I did come away with a really neat closeup take of the yellow Brittle brush. It was after a couple weeks of off and on rain like we had recently here in So Cal.

James, the wall of boulders show some great details with the ridges behind them making for good depth. I’d say that the colors are punched too much because of the blue mountain and the blue cloud shadows. The details in the boulder wall stand out.

Yes thanks Mark – I plead guilty to trying to punch up the mountain. I do have other shots of the chaos of boulders with a big stand of cottonwoods in the background. Mountain is probably too far away and diminished by desert haze.

I really like the composition of this image, James. I agree with @Mark_Seaver that the image looks like the saturation were pumped up a bit much.

Thanks Dennis. I’ll be back to that location. Maybe skip the mountain as background – it’s too far away.

I know this place as well. From an editing perspective I would darken that sky, and yes pull back saturation a wee bit. Composition and focus areexcellent.

Thanks David — one of these days I’ll capture the ultimate Whitewater landscape! If I don’t bust an ankle first.
