A Winter Blast Of Old Faithful

Image(s)

Image Description

During a winter workshop in Yellowstone I had been hiking around the basin that contains Old Faithful taking images of the other features that are present there. When the eruption started the geyser was back lit from my position, however, the moderate wind was from behind me and was enough to push the steam from the eruption away from me and effectively served as a diffusion screen enabling me to get , at least for me, a once in a lifetime image of a defined cone present within the eruption. I have returned to the geyser a few more times, but have not been able to reproduce the cone image I got that day.

I’ve been there & seen that. It’s surely exhilarating, ya? And I never had the opportunity you describe, at least at that geyser. The whole image is very blue, which I actually really like, but I wonder how it would be dialed back a bit? Maybe not as good, but would be interesting experiment.
Just LOVE the detail in the geyser spouting into the sky, and the room you gave to the foreground, giving it all context. I also enjoy the side light coming from the left. What an experience!

Thank you Connie. I agree that the image of the geyser is a bit on the cool side, but I did desaturate the blue of the eruption and felt that I was giving up too much of the detail within the cone, which I really like. However here is a reworked version with less blue.

What a cool image, Robert. After seeing your post with less blue, I think it makes a bit more sense. I don’t know what processing software you use, but an boost to the microcontrast in the cone would probably bring all of the detail back. If you have any more canvas available at the top, I’d love to see just a tiny bit more clearance between the top of the cone and the top of the frame.

Thank you, Dennis. I’ll give your suggestions a try. Robert

Blast off - you caught it well in seasonal splendor. I added the real estate at the top as @Dennis_Plank suggested and pumped up the contrast in the cone some. I would not mess with the color as “dialing back” the blues reduces the cold feeling of the image. To add the space in Photoshop, click on the crop icon and just raise the top.
Then use the TK9 action “fill transparency.”

Whoops. It looks like I got the revision in her twice.

Thank you, Larry. I tend to like my original presentation a little better as well. I did add some to the top of the image using a generative expand crop at home, but decided not to post that one. Bob
