After the Apocalypse and Repost

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Not really. This farm became part of the National Wildlife Refuge system about ten years ago because an endangered frog was found breeding on it. Interestingly, they are still leasing the land for grazing because it turned out that the frogs were using the cow’s hoofprints for laying their eggs. Thus far the refuge system hasn’t gotten the buildings razed and the vegetation is engulfing them rapidly.

Specific Feedback

I was trying to capture the engulfment of the buildings by the vegetation and I’m not at all confident this portrays that. I think I need to find another angle, though intervening stuff along the road makes it a challenge. Winter morning light seems to work well at this location, so I’ll have to remember to take my camera when I’m going that way and see if I can find the right angle.

Does the dead tree in the foreground mess with the image too much?

Technical Details

Sony A1, FE 200-600 + 1.4 TC @ 280 mm (I was on my way to photograph birds). monopod, f/8, 1/2500, iso 5000.

I think the foreground tree emphasizes the deteriorating (back to nature) nature of the area. It is part of the “apocalypse.” I like that you included interesting information about the area.

It always amazes me (from dry California) how fast the bushes take over things where it rains a lot. I think if you’re going for the apocalyptic take over feeling that it would be better to crop closer to include just the house, bushes and forest in the BG rather than the grassy area in front. The paint still looks pretty good on the house too.

Interesting story for sure. I like the hidden and revealed aspects of the buildings, but wonder about the placement of the dead tree (?) in the fg. It feels unbalanced there on the fenceline. Something worse to the left maybe? Desaturating would contribute to the apocalyptic feel which I don’t get with the bright colors. Was almost an apocalypse for the frogs though.

Thanks @Jim_Gavin @Ed_Williams and @Kris_Smith Different viewpoints are always helpful. I was thinking of eliminating most of the foreground. Kris: the area along the road is all grown up with lots of vegetation and this was the clearest spot I could find. There are others lower down with a different angle that I want to try. They’ll probably have some power poles I’ll want to eliminate, but that’s pretty easy these days. We’re scheduled for a week of rain, but it might work well photographed in the rain.

I just did a repost with some of the suggestions from above and a little extra playing.

Nice job on the repost Dennis.
