Aging Gracefully

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Graceful has been hanging out in the garage the past several days sheltering from the cold. But happily, she is still blooming and thriving and was up for a short photo session on the patio yesterday. >=))>

Specific Feedback

I let the stem stay soft and again used the ivy wall as a BG. Are you okay with the DOF here?

Bill, this plant is progressing in a wonderful fashion overall. As I stated earlier, this is moving towards a excellent project or as a minimum as a collage collection. Looks like the garage relocation is paying dividends in a given protection. Hopefully it will continue it’s blooming process too… :star_struck:

The plant that keeps on giving, Bill. I really like the business end, but I think you could get rid of about half of the stem on the left and maybe give it a trifle more room on the right in the process. All that stem makes it feel like it’s going to fall over any minute. A beautiful job on the flowers clusters and the aging bloom is indeed doing it well.

Beautiful, Bill. These succulents are so lovely. Am I understanding that this is the same specimen as previous images? She is indeed aging gracefully.

The DOF works for me, though there is a slight halo along the upper edge of the main stem: chromatic aberration? a soft stack? If this is a single shot, I’m not sure what would cause that halo. Maybe just the softer focus there? I only notice it at 100%, but if you were to print a series of these big, it might be worth playing with.

I like the background darkness and dappled light of the ivy. I can see removing a tish of the stem, but I also like the elegance of the arch. Maybe crop to remove just the first little branch/leaf junction?

Love seeing these,
ML

Marylynne: This is indeed the same stem. All of the buds will open eventually but the entire life cycle takes months. The challenge is that the stem is about 18" long so we have to use a plant support to keep it from drooping. It may take another 4-6 weeks for the last buds to bloom.>=))>

This is the gift that keeps on giving. And so nice to have on this deep winter day. Not that I don’t love it, but these bits of color and vivacity are enjoyable. The stack here looks crisp and seamless. The light is fantastic and I really like the blend of sage-greens with more vivid pinks and oranges. What a specimen.

The color, detail, and form are great, Bill. I like Dennis’s suggestion on cropping.

Hi Bill,
Graceful is certainly aging well. I love the soft diffused light and the pastel colors of the emerging flowers. The DOF works just fine for me as you have the star of the show tack sharp. My only suggestion would be a small crop from the left side; maybe 1/3-1/2 of the empty area. Beautifully done. Makes me wish I still had my cacti and succulent plants.
