Description

I went to Huntington Beach State Park in Murrell’s Inlet, SC Tuesday, and my nephew and I walked the north beach to the Jetty and then walked down the Jetty, which put us above the birds that were fishing. I love how after dropping the fish the bird was able to capture it, as you see it played out in these photos.

Specific Feedback

It was midday, so the lighting was harsh. I toned down the highlights and exposure some. Does it look okay, or is there something else I can do in LR? I had my polarizing filter with me but didn’t think to put it on. Maybe that would have helped?

Technical Details

Canon R5, Canon 100-500mm RF L lens at 343 mm, f5.6, 1/8000, ISO 800 (Auto ). I cropped it some in LR with minor edits.

Great job capturing the action and you handled the bright highlights extremely well, Shirley. An excellent set of images.

It’s amazing that you were able to catch the action and get the series. Awesome. Aways be ready.

Great series, Shirley. I really like the wing detail and your handling of the whites. Gull ID is tough and I went to Merlin to try to figure it out. It appears the differential is between Bonaparte’s and Little Gull. Merlin seems to favor Bonaparte’s, but the images I saw seemed more like Little. Do you know?

The Canon R5 captures 20 frames a second, so all I had to do was stay on the moving bird and it did the rest. It’s amazing how much happens in 20 seconds! Thanks for looking it up. I’m not positive, but I too am leaning towards Little Gull. Thank you for your kind comments as well.

What a wonderful series!! And great to see you out shooting again! Action so well caught, the tonalities look perfectly handled, and the BGs are lovely and suitably subdued. No suggestions at all!

Nice series Shirely. Love looking for and seeing the small fish that the gull is trying to recapture. Water droplets in the series are subtle but nice to see. Well done.
