I love the picture! Light and shadows are great as well as the colors!
The kayak is like an easter egg, I saw it only on the second look. I like that.

Hi Armin,
The kayaker definitely adds interest to this scene. I did not notice him at first; so it was a pleasant surprise when I did notice. I also quite like the backlight on the mosses hanging from the bald cypress trees. For my own personal tastes the shadows are quite dark so I think opening them up to show some trunk detail would be a plus. I could also see a small crop from the right and left sides to get rid of those couple of lighter areas between the trees along the edges. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. Just my opinion of course. How was your time in the swamp?

Ed, I loved the trip to the swamps. The Austrian Landscape Photographer Georg Popp has led several tours to the swamps. When he announced in 2022 that this would be his last one, I jumped on the moving train. To paddle through the swamps was a great experience. Photographing from a kayak was for me easy because I am owning a kayak since more than 20 years and I am also using it as a photography platform in Germany. If you want low ISO pictures with f:11+ a tripod and chest waders
are recommended. Some tour operators use flat bottom boats, but kayaks are offering access to extreme shallow or narrow parts of the swamps.

Armin, this is a lovely look at the backlit trees in this swamp. The kayaker does a fine job of putting the scene into a human perspective. I think your very dark foreground trunks works well at making a moody photo, but I also like Ed’s view with some details in the trunks. That reduces the drama a bit and makes it a touch more inviting. If you choose to go that lighter route, I would clone out the two trail markers.

Armin, I really liked this as presented, but then when I saw @Ed_Lowe’s rework, I think it bumped it up a notch. The kayaker is a necessary element imho. I feel like he’s entering a primordial, prehistoric, swamp from an old dinosaur movie.

I didn’t even notice the kayaker at first! The glorious backlit moss and trees against the dark trunks had all my attention. I love this exactly as is and wouldn’t bring up the shadows in the dark trunks. The deep darkness of the trunks give this a wonderful sense of mystery and a bit of foreboding. The kayaker has made it through the darkness into the light.
