… and life on the planet in general: “Alfie & Me” by Carl Safina, a noted ecologist with a serious background in many branches of science. It is the story of rescuing a baby Screech Owl near death and her subsequent amazing life with him and his wife. That story is wonderful in itself, but he weaves it into a network of ideas on our place in nature, with the history of today’s ideas about our superiority to lower life forms and how they have led to the damage we have done to the environment. It is beautifully written and beyond inspiring.

Thank you for posting this. We have friends who experienced a similar situation when they rescued a Great Horned Owlet and were allowed by fish and game to raise it. I will obtain an copy of “Alfie and Me”.
Reading this, too, and the related OWLS IN OUR YARD. Safina is great. I’ve read several: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/23247513-jan?utf8=%E2%9C%93&search%5Bquery%5D=safina
