Ascending Scrub

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was out back shooting various birds at our feeders recently when I caught this CA scrub jay taking off straight up from pecking on suet block crumbs on the ground back up the the block. I thought it was a cool moment.

Specific Feedback

Does it survive with its cropping (enough on top?) and is the BG doable?

Great catch of the motion and I like the pose, Dave. The background is rather distracting due to the varied luminosity (the bright green on the right and streaks of brighter areas). The bird itself looks like it has a bit of motion blur and maybe slightly soft focus, but the wing position and raised head would make it hard for me to delete this one.

I like the pose and the fact the wing didn’t obscure the eye. The crop looks okay. Agree with Dennis’s thoughts on the background.

This is another great action shot Dave. I really like the angel of trajectory here with just the right amount of wingtip blur. BG noted.

Cool take off image, Dave. The background could probably be toned down/darkened some but it’s not overly distracting as is. I like the action and position.
