Description
Another image from my Christmas trip to California and another local species. This California scrub-jay was one of a pair hanging around the acorn woodpecker’s granary tree which I posted earlier. They were flying back and forth looking for food. I suspect the scrub-jays are quite common in interior California, but was still happy to get some images of one. They differ in subtle ways from the scrub-jays here in Utah.
Specific Feedback
Any/all.
Technical Details
840mm, 1/160s@F7.1, ISO500 (didn’t realize my ISO was that low). Cropped to about 60% of the original and processed for the web.

Nice capture of this guy with good detail and a lovely BG. My feeling is that he is uncomfortably close to the edge of the frame, but the ones I know tend to be shy and he may be wanting to leave the scene.
Do you have more canvas top and right? You might try trading that for some on the left and see how it feels.
I would agree with Diane that there could be a bit more room on the right, but overall I like the composition. It’s an interesting perch and you have a nice background. You have a nice pose and good detail in the jay. Very pleasing image.
Several years ago the powers that be (American Ornithological Association) split the Western Scrub Jay into two species: Californian Scrub Jay and Woodhouse’s Scrub Jay. The former is along the west coast and the later inland, such as Utah.
Hi Govind, love seeing this pose with a nice head turn towards us over the shoulder. Nice subtle color tones on the bird. Pleasing background. Agree with the crop suggestions above - perhaps a bit more room on the right. Nice catch.
Very nice, Govind. I like the way you chose to leave the bird small in the frame. I think it helps reduce the effect of the large branch it’s perched on. If you’d cropped down tight, that branch would have been awkward and overwhelming.
This at once brought to my mind the Roy Orbison song: “California Blue, dreaming all alone”. So I do like the way it’s sitting in that solitary position stage right.
