Awakening Glen Affric

Glen Affric, Highlands, Scotland

There is a solitary birch tree resplendent in its golden gown of leaves isolated at the end of a spur of land otherwise covered in Scots Pine. I climbed the side of a hill through bracken and heather to gain altitude so I could assemble the scene just as I wanted separating its component parts to make the most appealing composition. I liked what I saw and waited for the mist to rise above the pine grove and intersect the wooded hill beyond. When it started to rain I thought misfortune would end my chance of capturing a glorious sunrise. The sky certainly remained overcast and colourless, but the softness of the light and the intense colours generated in the wet bracken and leaves made this scene glow most satisfactorily, quickly becoming a favourite with real and tangible mood.

Sure is a pretty scene! Really like the “little guy” off the point. Colors look good…I don’t think the yellows could accept much more saturation. If anything, I wonder about a little more breathing room on both sides. There are trees on both the L and R margins that are cut off and I guess I’d wonder about including them and making more of 2:3 format, or consider excluding them and going with a square format. I guess you’re a winner either way.

Looks beautiful Ian. I have admired your work for some time. I love the soft subdued light and the saturation of the yellows. My only thought would be to have framed this by taking a step or two to the right and given the little birch some breathing room from the tree on the left. Minor nit, nice work as always.

Lovely image indeed. I always like the colors of your image and this one is no different. The two partially submerged trees look like good subjects for an image all by itself.

Lovely color and light Ian. Your separation of all the elements makes your image really stand out for me.

This is a very beautiful image Ian. I love the soft light and the fantastic colours. Overall, a very pleasing image and an absolute joy to look at!

Beautifully done, Ian. I love the light and the splashes of yellow. The foreground ferns take this to another level.

Great image!

Ian, the colors and light are just beautiful is this scene! I also think the foreground ferns are the star of the show and elevate this whole scene!
Nicely Done!

Thanks everyone. Those colours in the foreground are flambuoyant for one reason only it is absolutely pi***ng down.

Agreed about the lovely colors Ian. I really like what the dry ferns add.

A like Gary’s idea about crowding that tree less; it kind of gets lost in this big view pinched between the point of land and the closer tree.

Beautiful autumn scene, I like the colorful fg and the whole atmosphere! Like already mentioned I too think this would look nice in a 2x3 ratio too, with a little bit more space to the left and right. Autumn is such a great season!
