Azara's Capuchin

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

At the last stop of my Brazil trip back in July, I stepped out of my room at our lodge in the Pantanal, and saw a troop of Azara’s capuchins commuting across the grounds. They were all taking the same route through a large tree in the courtyard, and then then leaping down to a short palm in front of my door. Naturally, I had to grab the camera and capture the acrobatics. A few frames turned out (thankfully, since I started in Single Frame following a macro shoot!) with views of their faces.

I have a couple color shots from this sequence, but liked black and white for this particular frame, as it really helps emphasize and isolate the shapes and textures of the subject and its destination.

WOW !!! B&W is perfect. What a great grab shot. To see this guy jump, have the vision and capture this image is way too cool. You were there Max !!! So Cool !!!

I’ve looked at this about 5 times already, it’s so striking. The processing looks like a charcoal pencil drawing, I really like it. I love the monkey in that pose.
It makes me feel some alarm though, because it looks like he’s going to impale himself/herself on the spikes of that plant, which look like really sharp metal spikes because of the processing! I think that’s why I keep coming back to look at it, I love it but I’m uncomfortable!

Max: this is a fabulous capture and equally fabulous use of BW as well as negative space. It’s a wall hanger!

Great body language, beautifully captured !
Palm tree adds another dimention to the image !

Hi Max,

Flying monkeys are priceless. Although this one does not have any wings like those presented in the original Wizard of Oz movie (LOL). The high contrast of this image works very well with the high key BG. Lraving the palm in the frame provides context which is important for completing the story. Awesome shot…Jim

Hi Max, love the flying pose of the capuchin and the space from the palm really sets him off. Black and white looks great. Nicely done.
