About This Image
I cruised out to a local park early Saturday morning to photograph nesting ospreys. Lighting was good, but dark and the birds were not active, so I left to find more suitable quarry. I was using a 600mm f4 plus a teleconverter distant birds. While packing up my gear to head home, a small family group of raccoon kits were snuffling in the grass looking for something to eat. I got down at their level and one of the little ones gave me this look. I cropped it close so that the viewer can see the cuteness of this little guy.

Awesome capture! Getting down to the animals eye level really helps the visual impact. The baby racoon is definitely cute and capturing him/her looking right at you is special. Also, the entire face is in great focus. Finally, the short depth of field really helps the eye stay focused on the face. Great image!
Definitely SOOO cute! Wonderful detail, lighting and hint of the environment. Kudos for getting this close, and I’m glad you had a long lens. I hope mama was used to people with cameras…
The adults are ferocious when angry. We once caught one in a live trap that we had out for a skunk. When we approached it nearly tore the trap apart. And when we managed to carefully pick up the trap to relocate it, it felt like it weighed about 30 pounds. A quick search revealed that was probably accurate. I’ve had them hiss and look like they were ready to attack when I surprised a group hiding in the bushes once.
