Bath time

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We were at the Salton Sea State Park. I wanted to get more experience with bird photography. It was later in the day so I think lighting was good. My bird app identifies as blue-winged-teal

Specific Feedback

Any suggestions on this photo image are welcome as well as tips on photographing these shorebirds. I am in California planning on going to a few areas for birds

Hi Dean, love the action here. Great catch with the splashing water and the feather going everywhere. Nice profile view of the duck with a good view of the eye. I think I would have opted for a faster shutter speed and more open aperture. Say something like 1/4000s. I think that would have rendered the duck a bit sharper. A fine catch.

Very cool splashes, Dean. I could see Allen’s point on increasing shutter speed, but this does work nicely as posted. I think it fills the air with droplets more than if you’d managed to stop the action completely.

Dean, wonderful bathing action. This is always fun to catch.
Very nice duck, although a bit soft. I think the water looks ok, but - to my preference - I like water drops as detailed as possible.

With these types of action shots, I usually use a couple SS’s, since the bathing is often more than a few seconds. Then you have a choice - as per your vision - to have clear, mostly-clear or very sharp water splashes. I usually use 800, 1600, 2400 and 4000. One of these will usually get both the duck and the action sharp - and it’s usually the highest SS possible with the circumstance.
