Late in the day swim

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was at a local pond south of Green Valley AZ. I found a few ducks including this one. My app says this is a Redhead Duck but I am not sure.

Specific Feedback

Cropping is the question I have here. This was taken late in the afternoon.

Technical Details

Canon R6ii RF 200-800 with 1.4x. 1120mm f/25 ISO 2500 on tripod.

Hi Dean, nice colors on the duck and water. I like the head turn towards us. I find these ducks tough to catch so good job in getting this one. You could play around with a slightly tighter crop but this is nice as is.

Definitely a Redhead, Dean. The only other possibility is a Canvasback and it has an almost white body and a longer all gray bill. You nailed the focus on this one. Personally, I’d probably go with a tighter crop and when I’m shooting down at a bird (something that’s difficult to avoid at many refuges), I’ll usually place them higher in the frame to give a bit of an illusion that they’re more on my level than they actually were. Something like this:

Nice detail and afternoon light on the duck. I like Dennis’s crop and his explanation-never thought of that before.

Nicely done and thank you @Dennis_Plank for drawing attention to that illusion!
