Description
Crescent City, California
Yes, we are having another big storm just at king tide time!
We’re just 10 miles north of the California border, so it’s a quick 30-minute drive to Cresent City, the closest lighthouse. There is another lighthouse off the coast, St George’s, that we can see from the house.

Technical Details
Cell phone - I’m not getting my Sony soaked ! - and the wind would have blown the tripod over.
Several power lines and poles removed. The light in the lighthouse is actually from an adjacent image, whose waves were not as spectacular. Easily popped over!

Absolutely amazing, Sandy - gothic, mythic. The bending tree and dark land against the white of the spray is an incredible contrast, not to mention the contrasting relationship between the natural world and the man made. And then, the way the house appears just as the mist is falling away is exceptional. The bare ground in the lower right of the frame makes it seem somehow as though the tide has reversed itself. That you took this with your cell phone gives me new respect for what an iPhone can do. But it also demonstrates - having the right gear is great but it always comes back to the photographer’s vision and voice.
Composition is great. I like that the wave partially obscures the lighthouse, the bent tree, power of the wave in the FG. There’s some spray far left that looks a bit weird (to me) but that’s not a criticism.
Wow! I love the raw power and drama with the crashing waves in this scene Sandy. Your fast SS did a wonderful job of catching the water drops as the water crashed the shoreline. The timing was perfect as we get a glimpse of the lighthouse between those waves. I also like the storm light you captured as it adds a beautiful glow and softens the image. Beautiful work with that cell phone.
Great capture Sandy! I visited this lighthouse a couple of years ago at sunset under very calm conditions. I would have never imagined big storm/king tide waves at that location. Amazing!

Thanks for the comments, everyone!
Steven - most of the rocky oregon/northern CA coasts can get incredible waves with violent storms, depending on wind direction. At the house, the winds are from the SW and I’m pretty sure in Crescent city, as well.
