beach celebration

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I live far from the coast now, after moving to colorado, so being able to spend a few days shooting seascapes was pure joy. I was lucky to experience two amazing sunsets. This one had such amazing colors it felt like a real celebration.

Specific Feedback

I am not sure about the colors in the picture as the reds and yellows in the sky look a bit artifical. I tried to balance the colors out but wasn’t really able to achieve this.

Technical Details

sony a7c tamaron 70-300 lens, f/14, iso 500 1/80 seconds. Did light and a little color adjustments in lightroom.

Hi Tamar. What a gorgeous sunset. I love it when the sky is reflected in the shallow waves washing onto the shore. For me, the reds and yellows look fine. It’s the blues that feel a bit oversaturated. But that’s a matter of taste. It’s lovely either way.

Tamar: Wonderful color palette and a marvelous comp. An interesting illusion for me is that on first glance I thought the horizon was tilted but I put a grid on the image and the horizon is perfect. I also like where you placed the horizon and the different segments from FG to BG. Really well seen and captured.>=))>

Thank you very much. I always check the horizon level in lightroom as one of the first steps as it might get crooked.

Beautiful photo. I live in San Francisco fifteen minutes by car from the ocean and have been shooting sunsets for years. Really glorious ocean sunsets often look “artificial” when captured by a camera and I also end up toning down the colors. Sometimes I don’t and people I show them to always ask “Has this been photoshopped?” Sigh…people just aren’t used to over the top light shows by Mom (mother nature).
