I went to a local field where the bluebonnets were in bloom here in Texas. It’s our state flower, so it’s nice to capture them every spring. They only bloom for a few weeks. I sat in one position for over 30 minutes and took numerous shots of different subjects and was lucky to capture bees on the flowers.
Feedback Requests
I would like feedback on the composition and lighting of the picture. It was a VERY bright sunny day, so I struggled with the lighting. Thank you!
Hi Gary. Welcome back. I like the composition on this image, it works quite well for my taste. The light on the bee itself is beautiful and the bluebonnets look pretty decent, though you might bring down the highlights a bit further in the main subject. For situations like this, I prefer the local adjustment brush in LR (I think the same thing is in ACR). It’s very versatile because you can use all the sliders with it in whatever combination you want, so if bringing down highlights isn’t quite doing it, you can bring down the whites a touch as well and even add a bit of texture if you think you need it.
A fine image. We have plenty of lupines here, but the only nicely blue ones don’t grow in mobs.
Gary, this is a nice shot. The backlighting works well especially on the bee in my opinion. I like @Dennis_Plank suggestion on the highlights. Well done.
Gary: As a Texan I love bluebonnets and this is a good depiction. The focus on the bee is spot on and I like your DOF choice. The comp doesn’t work for me as is because of the amount of OOF area taking up so much of the frame on the left. If it was on the right side and the bee was looking into it I think it would be more successful. On this I would crop away about half of the left side but still leave enough of that beautiful OOF BG to keep its role in the image complementary. I also tamed the highlights a bit in ACR. Great to have you posting and looking forward to more. >=))>
