Description
This was another cool find during our night walks in Borneo last year. The bird dropping crab spider is a successful mimic, typically lying flat on leaves as it trying to ambush prey. The appearance resembles bird guano, as the name implies, but the spider also secretes its own droppings as a stinky lure for prey and even spreads some silk around itself (barely seen in the photo above) to enhance the disguise.
Interestingly enough, when we photographed it at close range, it was in its prone position, but when we backed off it stood up in this seemingly-aggressive stance. Later that night we found some white flowers that had fallen on leaves. Their thin, splayed petals actually resembled the spider in this pose, so perhaps even the standing pose offers a bit of camouflage.
One note about the crop: the dark patch in the lower right does bug me, but I preferred to leave the extra space on the right to enhance the diagonal flow.
Max, very well captured. The Korean version of this spider just drops off the leaf in defense. It’s good to see four eyes, and that black corner doesn’t bother me at all - in fact, it enhances the leaf shape.
Max, the spider’s pose is awesome! I was wondering how you got it to happen… The black corner doesn’t bother me. Maybe a bit of burning on the whitest bits, legs and face?
What a find and what a shot. Max! Such a neat pose. I don’t have anything to offer to make this any better. So glad you found it, photographed it and shared here on NPN. Such a treat.
Max: A terrific find and capture and I really appreciate the natural history lesson. I’m with @Mike_Friel regarding how the corner enhances the leaf and the overall flow. >=))>
Great name for a spider, it says it all! The highlights seem a bit blown out to me, and if they’re not, maybe tone them down a bit in Lightroom? Other than that: fantastic pose and interesting bit of information as well. By the way, the bottom right corner doesn’t bother me at all.
