About This Image
From a recent trip to Sunriver, Oregon. One of the nice perks of retirement is the ability to plan trips on short notice when the weather looks good. Sunriver lived up to its name. The only bird unique to the area is the Mountain Chickadee; the others I can see at my bird feeders. Our rental was surrounded by pine trees and were filled with the grosbeaks, but they tended to be high in the trees and rarely came down-frustrating. We ate lunch along the Deschutes River, at what must have been a popular spot, because we were immediately greeted by several Steller’s Jays looking for handouts.
Beautiful work, Allen. I am curious about the Stellar’s Jay image. It looks a bit odd because it looks like the perch has much less light on it than the bird. We heard the mountain chickadees at Prineville reservoir but never saw one. Now I know what to look for.
Good observation, Dennis. I should have noticed that. In the raw file, the jay was quite dark compared to the rest of the image, so in processing I brightened the jay and darkened the background, but didn’t consider the perch.
All great shots. I especially like the Stellar’s Jay. The straight on view is priceless. He appears to be observing you as much as you are observing him.
Really nice series Allen. Fine details, color, and nice poses. I guess you have the red-shafted flickers in your area. We have the yellow-shafted down here. Well done.
I like the series as presented. I have never photographed a Steller’s jay and like the image that you posted. The photo shows that the bird knew where you were at and apparently was quite captivated by your presence. Well done!..Jim
