Black browed albatross in its habitat

I have mixed feelings about the composition of this image - looking down on the albatross which is relatively centrally placed in the frame. However, I do like the cliff in the background. I would value others thoughts on the image.

Details: Falkland Islands. ISO 125, f8, 1/320, 40mm. Small amount of cropping.

Hi Rob,
As you say this image does a good job of showing the bird’s habitat and accordingly tells that story. Nice job with that. Exposure in the blacks and whites look good to me. The grass to the right provides a boundary but doesn’t intersect the bird. I’d call this one a keeper.

Thanks for the feedback Allen

At 40 mm, you must’ve been extremely close; probably right on top of the bird. Yes point of view is an issue but I agree that the habitat in the background helps one understand the environment of these beautiful animals. I’m finding the image to be a little flat and I don’t know whether you can boost contrast in the white plumage and lighten up the dark plumage. This is an exposure challenge which probably could have used a fill flash used judiciously.

I think this depends on what you want the image for, Rob. It’s excellent for showing the nesting habitat and I like the other albatrosses in the background. It would be great as part of a series on these birds. As a straight artistic shot, the angle just doesn’t work well for my taste.

Thanks for the feedback David. First a little clarification - the 40mm focal length is probably a little misleading as I have done a little bit of cropping in post. Thanks for the feedback regarding flatness - I recall the image was captured mid morning. Flash isn’t typically something I use in my wildlife work and should look at educating myself on this topic.

Thanks for the feedback Dennis. I’m inclined to agree with you that this would make a good contextual photo as an introduction to a series but would struggle when standing on its own. Good to have some views on this.
