Black Swallowtail in flight

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The Black Swallowtail is supposed to be pretty common, but so far I haven’t seen very many of them. Thanks to the recommendations made by you, I’m now running all of my images through DxO PureRAW. The rest of the post processing is done in Affinity Photo 2 and is completely layer – based and non-destructive.

Specific Feedback

I’m new to this website and appreciate all comments.

Russell - a beautiful butterfly in a perfect pose. He is slightly ragged with the missing tail, which adds interest.
I’d suggest lightening the flower, if possible, and considering cloning out that bit of branch above the upper wing-tip,.
Really nice image!

Russ: Black swallowtails can be tough to expose properly but here you’ve done really well. The plane of focus is spot on with good detail in the wing facets and spots. I also like how the butterfly is oriented in the frame. I agree with @Sandy_Richards-Brown regarding making the twig above the right wingtip go away but that’s a small nit and one easily fixed. How did you track this one? Ours tend to be pretty busy in flight and when feeding. However you did it, this is a fine image.>=))>

Very well done, Russ. Excellent focus and you nailed a great wing position for a flight shot.

Nicely done, Russ. Glad you have found what works for you in capturing these guys in flight, and for the software that works for you in post processing.

Nice in flight capture Russell. Great to see the open wings so sharp and well exposed. I think these males are very photogenic. The butterfly pops off well from the background for my taste. Well done.
