About This Image
Taking pictures in Mammoth Cave is difficult because you cannot have a tripod or even a mono-pod so I had to sheet at an ISO of 10,000. I think this image is interesting because it shows all the shapes and colors of the cave that the river has carved over the eons

When I look at this image, I first see a blue face on the wall then I look around to all the colors. I feel in this image there are a lot of colors and textures to look at. I did have to do some noise reduction in Lightroom because of the noise caused by the high ISO.
I see the Blue Man! And of course the blue & gold are lovely complementary colors here. I do have difficulty making sense of the image, what it is - that it’s a cave. As an abstract it really works however.
I too see the man - and to me, “Paul Bunyan” comes to my mind. OR the “Brawny Man.” I even see a smaller human figurehead in the middle of the lower blue tier.
Fascinating image and you did very well to get this under the ISO 10,000 conditions and subsequent noise reduction. Good job!
I love the warm/cool color contrasts. This is a fun one to explore all the different shapes and details. This almost reminds me of some scene from one of the “National Treasure” movies with Nicolas Cage?
Hard pressed to make any suggestions or find anything to nitpick over. Quite a fascinating image!
Mike: It’s been many years since I went into the cave and my most vivid memories are from banging my head against low passageways. I had to look to see your blue man and he’s certainly there but did you see the beaver in the RLC? Really good work in trying conditions. >=))>
I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this one, Mike. It almost looks like it’s under water. It’s a very cool abstract with lots to keep the eye in the image and I do see the blue man’s head (almost like a mask of a warrior). You had quite the challenge shooting in a dark environment with no tripod so good of you to get an image this good. 1/5 of a second…you’ve got steady hands and good in camera stabilization. Quite a good abstract image!
Mike, the mix of blue, yellow, and gold plus the “critters” makes a fine photo. 1/5 s handheld is amazing…current camera technology is very impressive. My one suggestion is to burn in the brightest bits in the yellow area.
