Bosque Cranes 2017

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is from a mid December trip to Bosque del Apache in 2017. I was looking through the images for a mob of snow geese to use as a Christmas card and happened to notice a series of this pair. This particular frame was the sharpest, but these were very early morning and I was at iso 4000 on a Canon 7Dii, but I thought I’d let DxO do it’s thing. I was quite happy with the results.

Specific Feedback

The background in this one had lost the color wash from the sunrise, so I stole some of that color from another frame and added it to this using the TK panel “add color”. I had to tone it down quite a bit and I’m still not sure I brought it down enough.

Technical Details

Canon 7Dii, Sigma 150-600 contemporary @ 600 mm, f/6.3, 1/320, iso 4000, almost certainly a tripod with gimbal head for stability. Noise reduction with DxO PureRaw4, processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 4432x2965. Taken December 12th, 2017 at 5:58 a.m. (according to the camera).

Even before reading your own critique, I thought the background looked good and worked well with the cranes. I like the flying position you caught them in. The wing detail looks good; I guess the eyes could be a bit sharper. The sigma lens and 7D2 was a very good combination back in the day. I should do what you did, go back and look at some noisy images and run them through DxO.

this duo really nice in the frame especially its placement. Background is perfect and the hints of color really help. Nice to capture them both in this position. If I am ever healthy enough again I’d sure like to make it down there

Very lovely! I think the BG fits perfectly and it should make a very nice card.

I haven’t been there in years – by the time we first made it, the stories were already that “You shoulda been here last year.” It seems to have been in decline for a long time. Does anyone have more recent news of the conditions?

Very nice Dennis. Love the in sync flight poses and the background shows these birds off quite well.

Well done, Dennis. High ISOs aren’t as daunting as they used to be.

@Allen_Brooks
Allen, you’ll be quite amazed what Pure Raw can do for older images.

Dennis, a fine image!
Synchronized poses are nice and very complimentary BG.

The BG is fine and the 2 cranes make a very pleasing image. Good that you revisited old images.
Like you and several others, the experience is that the NR and optical corrections of DxO PR or PhotoLab can enhance old images considerably. On long hikes (foot or bike) I often only take a lightweight Olympus Stylus 1. Since I started using DxO it was like I had a different camera.
