Breakfast of Champions

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

Went on a scouting trip in the garden this morning not really expecting much. The first thing that caught my eye was a dragonfly perching on one of our little patriotic decorations. Some of those coming. Then a new hibiscus was basking in the early morning dappled light. Next was a fresh white rose in that same soft dappled light. I thought I was done and packed up the tripod and capped the lens but stopped in my tracks when I spotted this grasshopper perusing the hibiscus. It eventually crawled down onto the flower and started munching n the edge of the petal. He put on a nice show for several minutes. Perhaps he was auditioning for the cover of the Wheaties box. >=))>

Specific Feedback

Had to tame some BG highlights. They weren’t egregious but did I go far enough?

Bill, your poor hibiscus… This hopper is going to town… The highlights look fine to me, but the contrast feels strong. I wonder how some mid-tone dodgine of the hopper’s body would look.

Beauty and the beast! My immediate thought was to brighten up the 'hopper, as the flower overpowers the muncher. I even thought you could cut the flower in half horizontally (it’s had it anyway!) and crop in closer. My simplistic approach then would be to apply Nik Viveza to the insect to really bring it out, or the LR adjustment brush. But Mark’s approach is more subtle. Love the title.

Oh wow, Bill, he is tearing this flower up. It’s a pretty flower too. Oh well, he has to eat something. He posed for you for raising the flower for him, so you get something for your trouble. Nicely done.
